I began attending open studio classes at Columbia-Greene Community College in 2016, where Professor Fred Koschetzki wes supportive and encouraging. In 2020, he asked if I would be intersted in creating a sculpture for the campus- the college's first large-scale outdoor sculpture. I saw it as an exciting opportunity.
Using hundred of pounds of clay and a clay extruder, I built the sculpture in sections with thick, consistent coils. Structural balance, drying times and sectional contruction were constant considerations. Terra sigilatta was added for color.
Due to Covid my work had to stop for awile, but it was eventually completed in 2003. The Construction Technololgy Department built the cement base and installed the sculpture. I later added stain to the piece.
I titled the piece Presence because it now exists as part of the campus, coexisting with the Fine Arts building, surrounding trees, and circular space. I am gateful to Professor Fred Kkoschetzki and the Greene County Coummunity college for their help and support for mroject possible.Three years later the sculpture is complete, and I hope it will remain for many tears and inspire other students to create work for the campus.
